The Greenville Parks and Recreation Department hosted the Dixie Minor 10U State Championship tournament on July 6 -10. Even though the Greenville 10U All Stars fell to the Dothan All Stars in the second round, the tournament was a great experience for the city as a whole.
Greenville mayor Dexter McClendon expressed his pride in the City of Greenville, and the Parks and Recreation Department for a successful tournament weekend.
“There were a lot of people in town over the weekend,” the mayor said at last week’s city council meeting. “We’ve got to give credit to Jerome (Three) Harris and his staff for a job well done.”
Harris said the city hosted 16 teams over the weekend.
“We want to thank everyone for their support, and helping make the tournament a success.” He said he looks forward to hosting more tournaments in the future.
Proud mom of Greenville All Star hind catcher and shortstop Caleb Stone, Antigone Stone said she is proud of her son and the entire team.
“They fought hard against Dothan, coming back from a 13-1 lead, but still fell short 14-10. I’m always excited to watch my son in action. He made some amazing plays and the games were very exciting,” she said.
According to the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce, more than 700 visitors were in and out of Greenville during the tournament. Greenville All Stars’ coach Brad Heartsill said the experience was exceptional from start to finish.
“From the first class hospitality from our Chamber of Commerce, to our Parks and Recreation department doing an amazing job with the organization of the entire tournament,” Heartsill said. “I know there was so much effort put forth to host the state tournament here in Greenville, and I would like to personally thank everyone involved for the awesome experience.”
