Greenville High School senior point guard, Tyler Mallory, has signed a commitment to continue his basketball career at Reid State Technical College (RSTC) and will join the Lions in their inaugural year on the court.  

“This means a lot to me because I’ve worked so hard through the years. I am thankful to be able to play at the next level and that Reid State took a chance on me,” Mallory said when asked to describe the process of being recruited and signing with RSTC.

According to Mallory, Reid State was the most consistent college that recruited him, making them his final choice. Attending Reid State will also allow Mallory to stay close to home where he can remain close to his family and friends. 

Greenville basketball coach Brandon Matthews said since he has been the head coach at Greenville, his goal has been to establish a program that consists of excellence, toughness, and discipline. According to Matthews, Mallory bought into these values from day one and it’s these qualities that have afforded him the opportunity to play at the next level. 

“Tyler’s work ethic is unmatched. There are many players who say that they want to play at the next level but Tyler’s work ethic matched his aspirations. There was no disconnect between the two,” Matthews said. “As a player he is a phenomenal shooter, scorer, and finisher but his legacy will be that he elevated the level of play of the players around him.”

Mallory finished his senior season for the Tigers with over 1,000 points scored during the 31 game season with an average of 34 points per game. He was also selected as the Basketball Player of the Year by the Butler County Sports Network (BCSN) and was honored and awarded at their inaugural awards banquet. 

In addition to this honor, the BCSN also recognized him for breaking the Greenville High School points record with a 63 point performance in a double overtime win against Montgomery Catholic. The Greenville High School Varsity Basketball scoring record was also broken by Mallory as he scored over 2,000 points during his career as a Tiger. “

We really tried to create opportunities for him and did a phenomenal job for us,” Matthews added.

Mallory’s friends and family say he has been exceptional on the court but is also  a leader off court too. 

“Tyler is a leader,” said Mallory’s mom, Stephanie Johnson. “He is disciplined, well mannered, and gets along well with others.Anytime we had something going on, whether a Read Across America event in the elementary school or the team participated in a food drive, Tyler was always there. He understood his role as a leader and that leadership needs to extend beyond the floor,” Matthews said. His leadership on and off the field also earned him additional recognition by the Butler County Sports Network as he was awarded the first ever Jerome Harris, III community excellence award. “Basketball is temporary. We are trying to build up men who are going to make positive contributions to the communities they live in and Tyler really embodies that. I am most proud of that award,”  Matthews said. 

While at Greenville High School, Mallory was an honor roll student and has plans to pursue a degree in business while at Reid State, transfer to a four year university and continue his studies in sports allowing him to teach younger children. “

We are excited about this opportunity and I pray that he accomplishes all his goals, in basketball, in life, whatever he decides to do,” Johnson added.
