Two Butler County Schools – Mckenzie School and Greenville High – are considering candidates for head football coach and athletic director positions.
McKenzie School’s search began after the school system opted not to renew the contract for head coach Ezell Powell.
“We just decided to go in a different direction this year for the head football coach and athletic director,” said McKenzie Principal Michael Collins. “
Collins said the committee formed to consider candidates is reviewing applications and will soon recommend its top choice for the Butler County Board of Education to consider.
“We have assembled a committee of community members,” Collins said. “We have begun the interview process and are reviewing applications and interviewing qualified candidates.”
According to Collins, the committee will recommend its top choice to Butler County Schools Superintendent Joseph Eiland. He will, in turn, present the committee’s recommendations to the school board.
“We are very close to making a recommendation,” Collins said. “Mr. Eiland presents that recommendation to the board and they make the final decision on hiring.”
Eiland said the committee reviewed around eight applicants. He expects the committee’s recommendation soon.
“We’ll have a board meeting soon,” Eiland said. “The search went on for quite a while. Once they’re reached a decision, that news will be forthcoming.”
Greenville High is now back to the drawing board, considering candidates for a teacher who will also fill the role of head coach and athletic director after Demopolis High School athletic director Brian Seymore accepted the Greenville position on April 3 and resigned the following day.
Eiland said he will meet with Greenville principal Jamie Howard over the weekend to discuss the recommendations for the position.
“That process is very close to coming to an end,” Eiland said. “I will be leaning on whatever the principal recommends to me and I look forward to some closure on that as well and some excitement because our boys need the best. They need direction, leadership, and confirmation.”
