The Butler County Board of Education met Feb. 23 at the Central Office to hear progress of system building projects and view supplies collected for Selma families impacted by recent storms..

After the meeting was called to order, Superintendent Joseph Eiland addressed the assembly and provided an update on construction projects at Greenville High School and McKenzie School.

“Construction projects are going on schedule,” Eiland said. “We have a completion date for the Greenville High School stadium of July 23. Am I certain? No. You can never tell about the weather or what complications may arise.”

Completion of the gymnasium at McKenzie School is set for Sept. 27, 2023, just in time for Basketball season, Eiland said.

The board learned the parking lot at the school system’s central office was repaired after the board previously approved the purchase of gravel for the repairs. Alan Powell, the manager for the City of Greenville, came out and fixed the pot holes.

Butler County school children collected supplies for the area in Selma that was hit by recent storms. Eiland pointed out the items and described the children’s efforts.

“In the far corner of the building, you’ll see lots of supplies that were donated to our schools by children and families, to go to Selma,” Eiland said. “And, that’s not all of it”.

Eiland pointed out that Greenville Middle School had already taken a load of donated supplies into Selma.

“This devastation gave us an opportunity to explain to the students why we do what we do, why we have the weather drills,” Eiland said.

Other schools in the system are also planning trips to Selma to distribute the supplies they have received, Eiland explained.

According to Eiland, Butler County students gathered supplies that any family might need: laundry soap, paper towels and toilet tissue, bottles of water and disposable diapers.

Greenville Middle School Principal Bryant Marlow told the assembly about the efforts the school children have made toward the donation drive, and the outpouring of help they have received from the community.

“Our helpers carried a load of supplies to Selma,” Marlow said.

Eiland addressed upcoming renewal of contracts for Jaqueline Thornton, principal of W. O. Parmer Elementary School in Greenville, and Martha Lewis, the chief school financial officer for Butler County.

The board plans to enter negotiations for those contracts with the help of Greenville attorney Pete Hamilton.

When the contract paperwork is completed, it will be presented to the board for a vote at a later date.

The board also discussed the school dress code and voted to maintain the district’s current code. Students will still be required to wear uniforms to school.
