The Butler County Humane Society offers opportunities for people interested in owning a pet dog or cat to adopt an animal in search of a new home.

The fee to adopt a dog is $100 and $85 for a cat to cover the cost of the spay or neuter procedure.

After a week, the prospective pet owner will be able to take home the new pet.

Alabama, as well as the City of Greenville, have new laws protecting animals.

Greenville has a no-chain law. No animal can be left outside chained to just one object. They are prone to wrap themselves around the pole or tree in the course of the day.

The new law states an outside animal should be tethered between two poles, on a wire or rope, so they can have freedom of movement without getting twisted up. An example of an acceptable means to secure an animal is by attaching the leash to a clothesline.

The new State law requires pets to have a house or adequate shelter, and plenty of food and fresh water on a daily basis.

For those who can’t adopt a pet, there are still many ways to help the shelter.

Donations of dog, puppy, cat, and kitten food are always needed, as are towels, blankets and cat litter. Food and water bowls and leashes also come in handy.
