A Greenville man is dead after what investigators are calling a disagreement that escalated out of control.
Landon Betton, a 32-year old black male from Greenville, was taken to Greenville’s Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The Greenville Police department found Betton unresponsive in the backyard of a residence on Second Street following a call that came in around 5:30 p.m. stating there was a victim suffering from a shotgun wound.
“Greenville PD’s investigations division took over the scene and collected several items of evidence as well as identified and questioned possible witnesses to the incident,” Justin Lovvorn, Greenville police chief said. “Investigators determined that it appeared to have been a minor disagreement between the victim and suspect that escalated out of control.”
According to Lovvorn, investigators established a suspect, Jevarios Carter, 24 year-old black male from Greenville, and quickly notified surrounding law enforcement agencies to be on the look out for Carter.
“With the assistance of the Alabama Probations and Parole Office, the suspect was located within 24 hours of the incident and placed into custody,” Lovvorn said. “The suspect gave a full confession to the murder after being confronted with the evidence collected by Greenville PD investigators.”
Jevarios Devonte Carter has been arrested on a murder charge and is being held in the Butler County jail.
“I would like to commend the investigations division and the patrol division for their efforts in responding, controlling, and working this difficult situation,” Lovvorn stated. “The safety of our citizens is of the utmost importance. Again, I commend our investigators who worked diligently from the time this incident occurred in order to bring to justice a violent felon and prevent any further risk to the public.”
