Republicans are now in the majority on the Butler County Commission after County Commissioner Darrell Sanders switched from the Democrat to the Republican Party at the February meeting of the Butler County Republican Party.
“With Darrell’s move to the Republican Party, the GOP now has a majority on both the County Commission and the County School Board. This is a sign of the long term decline of the Democrat Party and the popularity of the conservative movement in Butler County. We enthusiastically welcome Commissioner Sanders to the Grand Old Party,” said Butler County Republican Party Chairman Cleve Poole.
“We are excited Commissioner Sanders has joined the Alabama Republican Party. He will find a political home that matches his core conservative convictions. The hard work and dedication of our County Party organizations under the leadership of our Republican leaders, like Butler County GOP Chairman Chairman Poole, have lead to record setting Republican successes,” said Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan.
Commissioner Sanders is in his third term on the Butler County Commission.
Butler County, once considered a Democrat stronghold, has been trending Republican in recent elections. Residents elected their first Republican state office holder – State Representative Chris Sells – in 2014 and their first countywide elected official – Sheriff Danny Bond – in 2018. Since that time, several other Republican county officials have been elected or switched parties.
