Last Tuesday was a cause for celebration at Georgiana High School. The Georgiana Panthers defeated the McKenzie Tigers during their first area game of the year.
The game, which occurred last Tuesday, Jan. 5, saw Georgiana’s varsity boys team beat McKenzie’s varsity boys’ team 66-35
The game saw Azenda Pennington score 14 points with six assists and seven steals, Tydarius Mobley and Amari Feagin had 13 points and Zack Boggan with 10 and 11 rebounds.
With this win in hand, the boys’ varsity team is currently 6-6.
The Georgiana girls’ basketball team also won by forfeit that night which puts their record at 4-8 (1-0) for the season.
According to Kirk Norris, the head boys’ and girls’ basketball coach, the game was very close in the beginning, but the team came together to secure the win around the second quarter. Regarding his team’s win Tuesday night, Norris said that it a big deal for everyone. “It was a big win for both the boys and the girls Tuesday night. This is a big first step in trying to host an area tournament here,” he said.
When asked about his thoughts about the opposing team, Norris said, “McKenzie is a big rival no matter what were playing or the score. With the kids being so close, there is always this heavy rivalry that’s interesting to see whenever we play them.”
