Joanne Brooks Godwin was born in Luverne, Alabama on February 07, 1938 and passed away after a long illness on July 05, 2020, at the age of 82. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 9th, in Luverne Emmaus Cemetery, 929 East Third Street, Luverne, Alabama, with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Mrs Godwin was the only child of James Clell and Mae Everage Brooks, who were also of Luverne, Alabama. She graduated from Troy University with a Bachelor’s in English, and later received her Master’s Degree in Advanced Education. She dedicated her life to educating future generations for 30 years at Jonesboro Senior High School under the direction of the Clayton County Board of Education. During her long and honored tenure, Mrs. Godwin had the delighted privilege to teach English to hundreds, if not thousands, of students, and she referred to every single one of them as her “children.” Those students still carry fond memories of her strict, but fair, instructions. The example she set for them through her leadership can still be seen in their own careers, and they are forever grateful to her.
In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Godwin requested that memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Luverne.
Active pallbearers will be Donald Nichols, Gary Cotton, Greg Foster, Will Howard, Brock Flynn, and Jason Wright.
