Crenshaw County Sheriff Terry Mears is warning local citizens of what appears to be a phone scam being attempted in the area.

According to Mears, a citizen called him to report a phone call received from someone identifying themselves as Sgt. Baker. A deputy with that name is not employed with the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office.

The caller asked told the person that the Sheriff’s Office had two warrants for their arrest, and asked for $400 to be paid over the phone to avoid arrest.

Mears stressed that no one from the Sheriff’s Office would ever ask for money over the phone or contact someone in that manner regarding a warrant.

“We might show up to see you if you have a warrant, but we aren’t going to call and ask for money,” Mears said.

The number, according to Mears, had a “334” area code.
