Who says nothing exciting ever happens in this neck of the woods?
This Friday night we have no less than three teams in Greenville Newspapers’ readership playing in the state semi-finals in their divisions—Greenville High School in Butler County, and Luverne and Highland Home in Crenshaw County. We have award-winning bands and great cheerleaders.
And I am encouraging you to show up and show out for all these folks.
Some of us definitely cannot turn cartwheels or do backflips (or front flips, for that matter); we can, however, heartily cheer our hometown heroes from the stands.
But let’s not just support those athletic events our southern hearts so dearly love. There’s so much more.
Inclement weather forecast for Saturday has moved all parades planned for Crenshaw and Butler counties (Luverne, McKenzie and Georgiana) to next Saturday, Dec. 8. Mark your calendars! Same times, different date. Show up and show out!
What is still on tap for this weekend is the Three Arts Club’s annual Christmas Bazaar down in Georgiana Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new site of the Rose Memorial Library. Open up your umbrellas and brave the rain—there is always a wonderful selection of baked goods, home-canned preserves and jellies, seasonal crafts, fun “white elephant” items and more, plus those tasty and very affordable $5 boxed lunches.
Over the years, these ladies have provided valuable scholarship monies to area high school girls, funded student tickets to GAAC productions in Greenville, helped families who have experienced house fires and other tragic circumstances and generally improved the lives of those around them. You can even get your photo with Santa—there are no age limits on that.
Also this week McKenzie will hold the first of what it hopes to be an annual event, its Christmas Tree Lighting and Tree Trail. The event, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been moved to Friday, Nov. 30 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. There will be decorated trees along the trail, children’s activities, Christmas music by New Vision and more.
Show up and show out down McKenzie way!
This Sunday, the Montgomery Ballet is coming to Greenville to perform the “The Nutcracker” on the GHS stage. Show up and fill that big auditorium’s seats. GAAC season ticket holders, come to the Ritz Tuesday night, Dec.1 for “Christmas at the Ritz.”
Show up and show out for the arts.
And next Thursday we also have our Christmas parade, tree lighting and Santa in the park in Greenville. The lights downtown create a festive fairyland and the floats are sure to be colorful and fun as we celebrate a “Storybook Christmas” in the Camellia City. Show up and show your appreciation for all the hard work that goes into putting such an event together.
Hope to see you here—there—everywhere!
