Funeral services for the late Mrs. Cora L. “Sadie” McGhee will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at noon from First Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Lionel Davis will serve as pastor, and Bishop Robert Reese will officiate. Burial will follow in Magnolia cemetery. Hudson Funeral Services, of Greenville, Ala., will be directing.
Mrs. Cora Lee McGhee (Sadie) was born on March 5, 1932 in Greenville, Ala., to parents, the late Rachel and John Johnson. As a child, she attended Pine Level Baptist Church and Pine Level School in Greenville, Ala. Shortly after she graduated from ASU in Montgomery, Ala., with a degree in education, she then moved to Detroit, Mich., where she taught children in the public school system for eight years. After teaching, she obtained a job with Bell South, which is now known as AT&T. She retired from AT&T May 4, 1991. While in Detroit, she married the Late Elijah McGhee.
She attended Oakland Avenue Missionary Baptist Church of Detroit.
She returned to Montgomery, Ala., in 2013, where she passed in her home on March 29, 2018. She lived there with her only surviving sister, Jessie and brother Leroy. She enjoyed spending time with her great-great niece, Dariauna (Queenie) watching wrestling, baseball, and Family Feud. She’d sit in her favorite chair and eat barbecue chips, Starburst, and drink Pepsi. She was 86 years old.
She is preceded in death by her late husband, Elijah McGhee; parents, Rachel and John Johnson; two sisters, Clara Savage and Johnnie May Johnson; two brothers, George Johnson and Fred Johnson.
She leave to cherish her memories her sister, Jessie Harris (Little), and brother, Leroy Johnson, both of Montgomery, Ala.; aunt, Sarah Steele of Greenville, Ala., the pride of her life, her great-great niece, Dariauna Montrice Harris (Queenie) of Montgomery, Ala.; sister-in-law, Sylvia Johnson, Detroit, Mich.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
