The Greenville Tigers faced off against Charles Henderson in the area tournament, after both GHS squads toppled Brewbaker Tech to advance to the finals.
The Lady Tigers were unable to overcome the scoring power of the Lady Trojans, who led by over 20 points for sizable stretches of the game.
Brief periods when the Lady Tigers seemed poised to close the gap were foiled by turnovers and missed opportunities.
Moeshia Brown finished the game with 19 points for the Lady Tigers.
The loss means the Lady Tigers clutched the 2nd seed for the Area, and will face an away game on Monday against Jackson.
The boys’ varsity squad began their game with ferocious energy and confidence, pulling ahead 14-4 in the first quarter, forcing turnovers and seemingly unable to miss a shot attempt.
The Tigers remained in the lead until the 4th quarter, when diminished shooting, defense, and the kinetic home court advantage of the Trojans suddenly shifted the momentum of the game.
Charles Henderson took the lead with around 4 minutes remaining and never lost it, slowly pushing the score out of reach by outscoring the Tigers by 15 points in the 4th quarter.
“We played well in the first half, and started to click on all cylinders.” said GHS head basketball coach Marcus Mickles. “But it’s like we’re a ticking time bomb, [we] began to turn over the basketball, 50/50 balls started to not go our way.”
Mickles said his team was not satisfied with the 2nd place finish.
“We always preach, 2nd place in unacceptable. We’re not dealing with consolation prizes.”
The Tigers claimed 2nd seed in the Area with the loss, and will play an away game on Tuesday against either Jackson or Wilcox.
Romontez Rhodes scored 14 points, and Tyrone Ingram had 10.
Area-team honors for the tournament went to Jeremiah Owens and Jabez Sims for the boys, and Adrienna Taylor and Moeisha Brown for the girls.
