A Greenville man is behind bars after a fight that broke out during a party Friday night turned deadly.
DeSean Powell, a 19-year-old man from Greenville, was charged with murder after an investigation revealed details regarding the altercation that erupted from a party held at the American Legion facility on Industrial Parkway, located just off West Commerce Street.
At approximately 12:40 a.m. early Saturday morning, officers with the Greenville Police Department responded to a shots fired call. The party that was in progress was interrupted as a fight broke out in the parking lot.
“During the fight, one individual pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at one of the other individuals involved in the fight,” said Greenville Police Department chief Justin Lovvorn.
The victim, who has since been identified as Kenterrian Johnson, a 29-year-old black male from Fort Deposit, was shot multiple times in the abdomen, and he had already been transported to an emergency room via personal vehicle by the time authorities arrived at the scene.
Johnson was airlifted to Baptist Hospital in Montgomery, where he later passed away due to his injuries.
The offender had also fled the scene by the time officers had arrived to the scene.
“Investigators worked the scene and spoke to witnesses, and they identified DeSean Jamar Powell as a suspect in the shooting,” Lovvorn said. “They were able to locate Powell a short time later and brought him in to the police department.”
Powell is currently being held in the Butler County Jail.
