Dr. John Reddoch Athey

Dr. John Reddoch Athey passed away on Dec. 22 at his home in Flagler Beach, Florida, at age 69.  Funeral services were held at Ramer Methodist Church in Ramer, Alabama, on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.  Dr. Athey is survived by his wife, Denise Manzolillo of Flagler Beach; two sons, Bryan Whitfield Athey of Altamonte Springs, Florida, and John Crispin Athey of Alexandria, Virginia; and his grandson, Jacob Athey of Altamone Springs, Florida.  He is also survived by his mother, Mildred Athey of Grady; his sister, Anne Athey Payne of Montgomery; and his brothers, Thomas Whitfield Athey III of Brookesville, Maryland, and Charles Athey of Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Athey attended Montgomery County High School and graduated from Auburn University Veterinary School of Medicine, graduating number one in his class. He had a small animal practice in Central Florida for over 40 years, and provided veterinary services at the Sanford Zoo for several years.  He adapted several surgical techniques that had been newly developed in human surgery for use in animal surgery. He devoted his life to providing compassionate, quality care to all animals in his care. In lieu of flowers, his wife requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or an animal organization of your choice.

Bonnie Ruth Etheridge Phillips

Bonnie Ruth Etheridge Phillips, 75, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 25.  A funeral service for Mrs. Phillips was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27, from the Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Phillips; daughter, Bonnie Thomas; two sons, Jimmy Ray Phillips and Donald Phillips; two grandchildren, Amber Nicole Phillips and Bobby Allen Thomas; and four brothers.  She is survived by two children, Leana Rebecca Davis and Doyle (Sharon) Phillips; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 9:30 – 11 a.m.

Robert Douglas Bailey

Robert Douglas Bailey, 81, a resident of Greenville, Alabama, died Tuesday, Dec. 27. A funeral service will be Friday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m. at Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home with Reverend Richard Holmes and Reverend Greg Swanner officiating and Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 29, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home.  Mr. Bailey was born April 19, 1935. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ruth Brown Bailey; daughter, Katie Bailey Merrett (James); son, Douglas Bailey; and numerous other family and friends. Pallbearers will be Billy Killough, David Burt, Mark Godwin, Jeff Brown, Andy Brown and James Merrett. Honorary Pallbearers will be Lane Brown, Charles Henderson, Wiley Duncan, Gene Bush, P.L.
