Jennyfer Maciel is ending her school year on a high note.
The Greenville High School senior signed a band scholarship with UAB on Thursday in front of friends and fellow band members in the GHS auditorium.
“I am super excited for Jennyfer Maciel and her choice to continue her education through UAB,” said Brett Johnson, GHS band director. “As trumpet section leader of the Tiger Pride Marching Band she has accomplished some pretty incredible things this year, and having her be able to sign a scholarship to such a prestigious school is a wonderful thing. Her leadership will be missed here at GHS, but she is leaving behind a wonderful foundation for others to follow in her footsteps.”
Maciel said she chose UAB primarily for its criminal justice program, but never considered giving up being a member of a marching band.
“I can’t imagine not being in the band,” she said. “It’s sort of the main thing I’ve done in high school.”
Maciel, who has marched since the eighth grade, said her experience as a member of the Tiger Pride Marching Band shaped her tremendously over the course of her high school career.
“It’s taught me leadership,” Maciel. “It’s taught me how to be a group member and it’s helped me grow up.”
Maciel becomes the fifth GHS senior to sign a band scholarship in the last month.
Stephen Cook, Devin Gavin and JaFreshia Shepherd signed music scholarships with Alabama State University, while Mary Margaret LeCoq signed a music scholarship with the University of Alabama.
“It is an honor to have the Greenville High school band represented at these universities and hopefully will have more in the future,” said Johnson.
