Two LBW Community College students will soon receive prestigious recognition in Montgomery for exceptional academic achievement, distinguished leadership, and community service.

Chelsea Powell of Andalusia and Sarah Elizabeth Godwin of Greenville are named as 2016 All-Alabama Academic Team members with the Alabama Community College System.

“These students represent the highest achievers of our college,” said Dr. Herb Riedel, LBWCC president.

“We are extremely proud of what they have accomplished both in and out of the classroom and this is well-deserved recognition for them both.”

All-Alabama Academic Team students are nominated by their respective colleges and must possess a minimum GPA of 3.25, be involved in campus activities, and have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours at the institution.

Powell, daughter of Eugene and Leigh Powell of Andalusia, completed an Associate of Science degree in December. She transferred to Troy University to earn a bachelor’s degree in math education and plans to teach math at the high school level.

While attending LBWCC in Andalusia, Powell served as an Ambassador, served as president of the Alpha Beta Eta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, and participated in the Student Government Association and Relay for Life Team.

Godwin, daughter of W.S. and Rebecca Godwin of Greenville, will complete an Associate of Science degree in May and plans to transfer to AUM to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.

“I knew this profession was something I would want to do ever since my first niece was born. I’ve always had a passion for helping and loving others and also because I love understanding how the body works,” said Godwin.

“I know in this degree field I will not only be able to help others physically, but I will be able to connect with them emotionally and spiritually as well, which I hold as very important.”

She said she is also honored to be a part of the All-Alabama Academic Team this year.

“Being selected shows me that hard work does pay off. Being one of many to have applied for this honor, and then being selected, just means so much. My time at LBW has been awesome and I could not think of a better way to end my chapter here at LBWCC.”

During her two years at LBW, she served as an Ambassador; was a member of the Student Government Association, serving as president this year; was a member of the Mu Alpha Theta mathematical honor society; and participated in the Beta Pi Nu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, serving as president this year.

“I believe I have received a very good core education at LBWCC,” said Godwin. “This school is everything I was looking for, even if I didn’t realize it in the beginning. I not only learned academically, but also socially. I have been so blessed to have had the opportunity to spend the first two years of my college experience at LBW.”

Students from all the colleges within the Alabama Community College System will be recognized in April at a luncheon in Montgomery.

The All-Alabama Academic Team recognition program was founded in 1995 to complement the All-USA National Academic Team Program sponsored by USA Today, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and the American Association of Community Colleges.
