Suspect charged with murder, authorities in active search
Law enforcement agencies from Greenville, Montgomery and the United States Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force are searching for the Montgomery man who shot two people on Wimberly Street late Saturday night.
Michael James Delbridge, 27, has been charged with murder in the shooting death of 29-year-old Kerry Smith of Greenville. The other victim, Michael Loveless, 30, also of Greenville, is in stable condition and will be released from Baptist South Medical Center this week.
Greenville Police Department Lt. Justin Lovvorn said officers from the GPD, Montgomery Police Department and the Montgomery Sheriff’s Office are looking for Delbridge.
“We went to several places in Montgomery (Monday night) and we weren’t able to locate him at any of those,” Lovvorn said. “I have law enforcement in the area who are constantly looking for him.”
On Monday, officers acquired enough evidence to obtain a warrant for Delbridge’s arrest. According to news reports, Delbridge and his lawyer were going to turn themselves in, but never did.
Lovvorn said that the GPD is still investigating the shooting that occurred on Saturday night at 11:20.
Lovvorn said the department received a call about some gunshots that were being fired on Wimberly Street.
“Officers also received a call from the emergency room from (L.V.) Stabler that a gunshot victim came in there,” he said.
Lovvorn said that Smith was transported directly to Baptist South. Loveless was later transported to the Montgomery hospital from the ER.
Lovvorn said he thinks the shooting resulted from an argument, noting that there were a lot of people outside on Wimberly Street.
We will update our readers as more information on this case becomes available.
