Elton Demond Mitchell

Mr. Elton Demond Mitchell, 67, a resident of Brantley, passed in peace Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014. A 1965 graduate of Brantley High School, Elton attended Troy University where he received a BS in education and a Master’s Degree in Administration. He devoted 32 years to the Crenshaw County School System as a teacher, a coach, a principal and assistant superintendent. In addition, he served in the Alabama National Guard for 20 years. A lifelong member of Brantley Baptist Church, Elton enjoyed singing bass in the choir and serving on various church committees. He cherished the love and support of his Sunday school class and valued their friendships. After retirement, Elton was never at a loss for hobbies. His main hobby was spending time with his grandchildren and teaching them life lessons on his beloved family farm in Dry Creek. He also enjoyed building projects, spending time with his dog, Malady, and watching his hummingbirds. Elton enjoyed life to the fullest and shared his contagious sense of humor with everyone he met. He is preceded in death by his father, Douglas Mitchell. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mary Hollis Mitchell; his daughter, Tiffany Mitchell (Lonnie) Worthington; his son, Brent (Hanna) Mitchell; his mother Willie Pearl Mitchell; and his sister Lydia (Jim) McNeal. Elton was the proud grandfather of Landon LaSalle, Savannah Jones, James Aiden Worthington, Chelsea Worthington, Logan Worthington, Walden Mitchell and Reese Mitchell. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014 at Brantley Baptist Church with Rev. Travis Johnson and Rev. Burney Enzor officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Brantley Baptist Church, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or The Gideon’s Ministry.
