LBW Community College’s new librarian is Hugh Carter, an Alabama native who recently returned to the state after working with a two-year college in Louisiana.
“Mr. Carter joins our professional staff as the director of learning resources,” said LBWCC President Dr. Herb Riedel.
“His educational preparation and related work experience will be an asset to students as he provides the assistance they need in accessing the vast amount of research materials available today.”
Carter holds a Master of Library Information Studies and a Master of Arts degree in political science from the University of Alabama.
“I am a native of Albertville and my family is still there,” Carter said. “I wanted to get back to Alabama and am grateful to be at LBW.”
His interest in library science developed from spending many hours in university libraries, he said.
“Research has changed dramatically for students through the years,” Carter said. “There is a lot more information available more quickly than it used to be, and it’s a matter of knowing how to use the resources to gain the information.”
His goal is to introduce students to the multitude of databases available online and teach them how to navigate to find the information they need, including the Alabama Virtual Library provided by the state and available to anyone, he said.
“I want to help students save time and show them a more direct approach in finding information. I like to think I teach efficiency,” he said.
Carter will oversee library operations at all LBWCC locations, and his office is located in the William H. McWhorter Learning Resource Center on the Andalusia campus.
