Newton still holds edge in funding as election nears

Candidates for House of Representatives District 90 have released financial data showing campaign contributions and expenditures through the month of May.
According to records accessed from the Alabama Secretary of State’s website, Republican candidate and incumbent Charles Newton has raised $136,672.90 to date with major contributions coming from a number of political action committees, including an $8,000 donation from Alabama 2014 PAC, a $21,000 donation from Progress PAC and a $10,500 donation from TRUK PAC.
Newton has reported spending $92,222.98 of his campaign funds, including $77,450.21 in May.
Republican challenger Chris Sells has $114,182.52 in his campaign fund, including a $105,000 loan. Sells has received several $1,000 donations from private citizens, but has received no money from political action committees.
Sells has reported spending $111,654.48, including $78,615.71 in May.
Democrat Walton Hickman has raised $1,450, including a $1,100 loan.
Newton and Sells will face off in the Republican primary on Tuesday.
