Dale Gates is seeking the District 2 seat on the Butler County Board of Education.
Gates, a 1984 graduate of Greenville High School and a 1988 graduate of Troy University, said his reason for running for school board is that he would like to see a change in the school culture.
“I’m not a politician or a public speaker, so I’m going to keep it simple,” Gates said. “My vision is kind of like thinking back to the 1980s when I was in school. My vision is to bring back the days that I remember. Our math team went against Mountain Brook and won. Our football team went to state. Our band got superior ratings. We had a great art teacher, a great theater teacher. I just can’t even think about my high school days without thinking about the glory we had. It was awesome, and I don’t see the school culture there now. I don’t see the pride in our schools. I think our vision is to get our school pride back and make our community proud of us.”
Gates and his wife Cheryl reside in the Monterey community of Forest Home and have four children. The couple’s children attend W.O. Parmer Elementary School, Greenville Elementary School and Greenville Middle School.
“I am a member of three PTA’s, serve as an officer on two and I am a school volunteer,” Gates said. “My four years as a Cub Scout leader has given me the opportunity to meet hundreds of children and become a familiar and trusted face. I am proud of our kids, our schools and our communities. I would like the opportunity to represent District 2. I will listen, I will advise and I will support our public schools. What matters to you, matters to me.”
Gates is running against incumbent Terry Williams.
The election is set for Tuesday. The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
