John William Moorer, Sr.

John William Moorer, Sr., 85, died May 19 at Jackson Hospital, following a brief illness. John was born in Forest Home, Ala., and moved to Montgomery in 1954.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in occupied Japan following World War II.  After his military career, John continued to serve his community, retiring after 27 years as a Deputy Sheriff, for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department and 17 years as a security guard at Jackson Hospital.

John was a member of Capital Lodge # 11, F & AM, Alcazar Shrine (Keystone Cops Unit), and Liberty Chapter # 254, OES.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Helen Skipper Moorer; one son, John William Moorer, Jr. of Montgomery; one daughter, Marcia Ellison (Jerry) of Powder Springs, Ga.; three grandchildren, Brad Ellison (Angie) of Kennesaw, Ga., Lauren Hartin (Jay), of Prattville, Ala., and Mark Ellison, of Powder Springs, Ga.; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and one brother, Arthur Wayne Moorer (Carol Ann) of Moorehead, W.Va.  He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Ollie Moorer and his mother, M.E. Bender Moorer of Forest Home, Ala., and six brothers.

Pallbearers will be:  Jerry Ellison (Honorary); Brad Ellison, Mark Ellison, Jay Hartin, Carey Moorer (Honorary); Jimmy Lester, Art Williams, and Sid Rooker.

The family will receive visitors at 10 a.m., Friday, May 23, at White Chapel Funeral Home in Montgomery. Following visitation, the tribute to John William Moorer will began at 11 a.m.  Graveside services will follow in the Forest Home Cemetery in Forest Home at 2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Alcazar Shriner’s Children’s Transportation Fund, 555 Eastern Blvd, Montgomery, AL 36117.
