The Greenville Police Department is searching for a suspect in an early morning homicide.
According to authorities, a disturbance at the Front Street Pub in Greenville led to a 31-year-old Greenville man being shot to death on Commerce Street around 1 a.m. Sunday.
“Just before 1 a.m. we got a call about a disturbance at the Front Street Pub, and when officers arrived on the scene they observed one black male fatally injured from a gun shot,” Lt. Justin Lovvorn said. “They quarantined off the area, and we were able to develop a suspect pretty quickly after talking to witnesses.”
Authorities are currently searching for Marlon Herbert, 33, of Greenville.
“We looked for him at his residence, and places he’s know to hang out, but we weren’t able to come up with him last night,” Lovvorn said. “We’re encouraging anyone who knows him to urge him to turn himself in so we can get his side of the story and make sure we have all the facts.”
Lovvorn said that according to witness statements an argument started inside the pub, and eventually escalated outside in front of the establishment. Herbert then reportedly got in a car to leave the scene. Witnesses say that Russell Gregory reached inside the car and attempted to pull Herbert out. Authorities say that’s when Herbert shot Gregory in the head.
“At this time we’re treating this case as a homicide,” Lovvorn said.
The case marks Greenville’s first murder of the year.
