An Ariton woman is dead following a Friday evening crash in Brantley.
State Troopers Spokesperson Kevin Cook said the crash occurred at 6:05 p.m.
Cook said Melissa F. Wilkerson, 38, of Ariton was killed when she lost control of the 1998 Honda Accord she was driving, ran off the road way and overturned.
She was not wearing a seatbelt, Cook said.
“Wilkerson was transported to a local hospital where she died later from injuries she sustained in the crash,” he said.
Cook said circumstances leading up to the crash are still under investigation, but State Troopers confirm alcohol and speed were the factors in the crash that occurred on East Emmett Avenue.
Local authorities said they pulled Wilkerson over after receiving word from family members that she allegedly took a vehicle without permission.
Authorities say she nearly struck a Crenshaw County Deputy’s vehicle when she ran through the traffic light in Brantley and that she reached speeds in excess of 60 mph as she traveled through a local housing authority area before losing control of her vehicle.
She was ejected from the vehicle, authorities said.
