Georgiana School freshman Jacquez Payton scored a game-high 30 points to power the Panthers to a 64-35 win over Florala High School Tuesday night in Georgiana.
“Jacquez played extremely well for us,” Georgiana head coach Kirk Norris said.
While Payton’s play on offense certainly stood out, Norris said it was his squad’s play on the defensive end of the court that really caught his attention.
“Overall, I think our team defense was a lot better,” he said.
The 35 points the Panthers allowed Florala was a season low for Georgiana, which now owns a 4-0 record.
Along with Payton, sophomore Devin McMeans and senior Carlo Mitchell scored in double figures. Both McMeans and Mitchell tallied 10 points.
“Our strength right now is being able to rely on different guys to produce every night,” Norris said.
Austin McNeil led the Wildcats with 12 points.
“I feeling we are getting better, but the schedule will only get tougher,” Norris said. “We can’t be complacent with where we are now, we must continue to improve.”
Georgiana will be back in action Tuesday when it takes on Straughn High School in Georgiana. B-team action is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. with varsity play set to follow.
