Week 7 football picks

It’s a busy week this week for the county with two more homecomings — one at Highland Home and one at CCA.
CCA vs Evangel
CCA takes on the Lions of Evangel this week.
The Cougars have had some trouble on and off throughout the season, but I don’t think this will be one of those weeks.
Right now, things look pretty good for CCA to make the playoffs, but a win here would lock it up.
When you combine that motivation with the fact that Evangel has only won one game and this one is homecoming, it should be a win for CCA.
CCA 42, Evangel 13
Calhoun at Highland Home
It’ll be the second week in a row that a local team has faced off against Calhoun for homecoming.
The Tigers don’t have much depth at all, and last week, their best player was suspended.
He should be back this week, but even with that, I expect Highland Home should come out with a win.
Calhoun may break a couple of plays for scores, but the Squadron ought to be able to win fairly easily.
Highland Home 27, Calhoun 6
Brantley at McKenzie
McKenzie has been a solid team in recent years, but I think the Tigers are having a downturn this season.
I thought Brantley might have a fight on their hands last week against Geneva County, but I was just a wee bit wrong about that.
The Bulldogs shouldn’t have any trouble getting a win in Butler County.
Brantley 47, McKenzie 6
Luverne at Elba
Luverne travels to Coffee County to take on defending 2A state champions Elba.
LHS has struggled in recent weeks with injury problems, but they a chance to rest as much as they could last week against Calhoun, but Elba won’t give them any opportunities to take a breath.
The black and gold Tigers have only lost twice this season, by a combined four points. (They lost by a point in the season opener to Opp and then by three points to Straughn — both 3A opponents.)
They’ve obviously not dropped off much from last year’s title team.
That, combined with Luverne’s depth woes, might spell disaster for the red and white Tigers.
I’m going to have to go with the black and gold on this one.
Elba 48, Luverne 27
Last week: 3-1
Overall record: 18-4
