The magic number is 85,000.

That’s the goal for this year’s Relay for the Life, which will be held May 10.

The Butler County Relay for Life committee announced its 2013 goal at a recent meeting.

Relay for Life raised more than $75,000 in 2012.

“We looked and we think that the goal will be $85,000, which is what it was last year,” said Relay for Life Co-Chairman Galahad Smith.

After finishing nearly $10,000 under its 2012 goal, Smith said recruiting new teams is the top priority.

The Relay for Life website was launched Thursday and teams will have the opportunity to sign up on the website and community members will have the ability to donate as well.

Smith said the May 10 date, which falls on Mother’s Day weekend, was selected to avoid a conflict with other events, such as the Butler County Sheriff’s Rodeo.

“If it were to be changed, it would have be done carefully, because there’s a lot of things going on,” Smith said.
