A Georgiana man passed away on Thursday from injuries suffered in an accidental shooting early Wednesday evening.
According to Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden, Terry Lee Odom, 53, was shot at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday, when his 85-year-old father, Earnest Odom, mistook the man for a red bird.
“Terry Odom had been out picking figs for his mother,” Harden said. “He took a bunch inside and then went back outside and climbed on top of the barn to pick the figs out of the top of the tree. His daddy had been shooting birds that were eating the figs, and when he heard something on top of the barn he went outside, saw something red up in the tree and shot it thinking it was a red bird. It was his son.”
Odom was transported from Welcome Church Road to Georgiana Hospital and later taken to Baptist South in Montgomery.
He died at around noon on Thursday.
Harden said the shooting remains under investigation.
