A Dozier woman is out on bond after traces of illegal drugs were found in her newborn son.
Crystal Lee Gillum, 22, of Dozier was arrested in Covington County for chemical endangerment of a child.
According to Deputy Earl Thompson, who investigated the case, the child was born in Luverne on April 17 and tested positive for marijuana and opiates.
Thompson said the Department of Human Resources contacted the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office, who issued a warrant.
The CCSO searched for Gillum in Dozier, but the Andalusia Police Department located her in Andalusia and returned her to Crenshaw County.
Thompson said that Gillum admitted to smoking marijuana and using Lortab during pregnancy, but that Gillum said the Lortab was prescribed to her by a doctor.
Thompson said that aspect of the case is still under investigation.
Gillum is currently out of jail on bond and awaiting a trial.
“We’re continuing to work along with DHR and other agencies to look out for the welfare of children,” Thompson said.
