Georgiana School upset then-8th-ranked Andalusia High School 61-56 on Tuesday.

On Thursday, the Panthers (8-2) continued their climb up the Alabama Sportswriters Association Class 1A poll. Georgiana entered the week ranked No. 10. After winning the Straughn High School Christmas Tournament and upending Andalusia, the Panthers climbed to No. 6 in the latest poll.

“It’s always good to get recognition for your program and to be recognized throughout the state, but rankings don’t get you in the playoffs or advance you any farther once you get there,” Georgiana School head coach Kirk Norris said. “We really don’t talk about it. The kids know that they are ranked but they also know that it really doesn’t determine anything as far as the season. They know what is ahead of them this season and know they have to take it one day at a time. Their focus is on winning an area championship and advancing deep in the playoffs.”

Fort Dale Academy’s girls’ basketball team also held on to its top-10 ranking. The Lady Eagles (3-5) dropped from No. 7 to No. 8 after dropping two of their last three games.

Fort Dale’s boys’ basketball team (5-3), which snapped a three-game skid with a win against Northside Methodist Academy, was nominated for the second consecutive poll, but failed to crack the top 10.
