The city of Luverne and local citizens have planned a Veterans Day ceremony at the city‘s veterans’ park, located at the intersection of Highway 331/West Third Street and First Avenue.
One of the highlights of the event will be the dedication of an M1 antitank gun.
The city has been working for several months to get the gun installed after obtaining it from Fort McClellan in Anniston.
Tommy Odom has refurbished and repainted the gun.
“We’ve invited the local mayors to speak and to recognize veterans from their areas,” said Hilda Maddox, who has served as one of the event’s organizers. “Mayor Joe Rex will do the dedication, and we’ll also have the National Anthem and the playing of Taps.”
Following the program, there will be a reception at the Luverne Public Library.
A Missing Man Table will be set up at the reception.
“Everything on the table is significant and has a meaning in memory of those Prisoners of Wars, Missing in Action and Killed in Action,” Maddox said.
The refreshments are being prepared by the Friends of the Library and Susannah Wesley of LUMC.
“We’ve been planning this event for a couple of months, and we hope to have a good turnout,” she said.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the veterans’ park.
