Authorities are still investigating the death of a Greenville woman struck by a train last week near Pierce Street.
Ashley Jernigan, 37, was struck by a train at approximately 4 p.m. Thursday and died soon after being transported to L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital.
According to Greenville police, the train engineer reported seeing a woman in the path of the train before attempting to step off the tracks at the last moment.
Jason Jernigan, Ashley’s husband, said his wife was on the tracks following an argument between the two. Ashley had been struggling with the fact that her cancer had returned, Jason said.
“Ashley was walking down the middle of the track and I was begging her to get off,” Jason said. “I never dreamed in a million years that she would have stayed on there. At the last second she tried to get off, but it was too late.”
Ashley leaves behind four children, three stepchildren and a husband, Jason said.
