The Greenville Police Department has made an arrest in the alleged rape of an 11-year-old girl.
According to Sgt. Kenneth Hadley, the police department received a call at 9:15 p.m. Thursday night in reference to an 11-year-old who reported that she had been raped.
Hadley said that the victim was reportedly staying at her cousin’s house, and claimed that she was left alone before being sexually assaulted by a 24-year-old.
After a preliminary investigation was completed, Hadley said that William Samson Nelson, 24, was arrested and charged with first-degree rape, which is a class A felony.
Nelson is currently being held on $30,000 bond.
“It is despicable to think that a 24-year-old man could do this to an 11-year-old,” said Chief Lonzo Ingram. “We look forward to a rigorous prosecution.”
The GPD also made an arrest in a robbery case dating back to 2008.
The incident occurred on Jan. 23, 2008, when two women were exiting a building with a night deposit and were forced at gunpoint to surrender the bank bag, according to Hadley.
Ingram said that after receiving some new information, the department was able to revisit the case and make an arrest.
James Allen Neal, 22, was arrested and charged with robbery, first degree.
Neal is being held on a $30,000 bond.
