The Georgiana City Council has voted to approve an ABC License for Off Premises Beer and Wine for the city’s Dollar General.
“The ABC Board has already approved beer and wine sales for all Dollar Generals in the state. The local councils have the final say. My view is, better they buy it at a Dollar General than some other places, where at least they are likely to get ID checked properly,” said Middleton.
The Council also approved participation in the State Sales Tax Holiday, set for Friday, August 5 through Sunday, August 7. The event gives shoppers in the city the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers and clothing free of state or use tax. The City will also waive local sales or use tax during the Holiday.
The Council voted in Darlene Buskey and Jerry Lopez as the newest members of the Zoning Board.
The Council also voted to approve an amendment to the Business License Ordinance to include commercial storage units.
“We have two storage units in town and unlike other businesses, they have not been required to have a license up until now,” said Middleton.
In his remarks before the Council, the mayor expressed disappointment in the lack of participation in the recent City-Wide Clean-Up.
Council Member Lisa Lowe questioned whether several mesh-type garbage receptacles could be installed downtown to help cut down on the trash tossed in the streets.
“We don’t have anything like that right now, and with the Hank Festival coming up and lots of traffic downtown, we need more ways to keep the streets clean,” Lowe said.
Middleton also said a request by Mr. Mount to turn his Palmer Ave. market into a sports bar would be put on the May agenda for consideration by the Board.
