A local volunteer with the Greenville Parks and Recreation department is organizing a team to send to the Amateur Athletic Union tournament in Montgomery.

The AAU is one of the largest non-profit volunteer sports organizations in the United States.

Quinton McCaster will be organizing the team, which plans to complete in the state Qualifier Tournament in Montgomery March 18-20.

“Our organization will draft a 14 and under team from our local youth,” said McCaster. “My goal is to motivate the youth and give them the opportunity to set goals and follow their dreams.”

McCaster said he was inspired while playing for Coach Drew Bass as a child.

“I played on several of his teams and was inspired by how he could coach and raise funds for his team,” McCaster said. “I would like to give my players the same opportunity to play against the highest level of amateur basketball competition.”

McCaster will hold tryouts for the team on March 5, at 10 a.m. at the Old High School gym.

The tryout will be open for all persons in Butler County, but applicants should be aware that the practice schedule will be vigorous and reliable transportation to and from all events would be necessary.

The team is seeking donations to help offset the costs of uniforms, equipment and entrance fees.

“We plan to make this experience the best we possibly can for these young men, so the more we raise, the more we will be able to do,” McCaster said.
