Cleve H. Smith

Cleve H. “Papa” Smith Jr., age 90, died Tues., Jan. 25, 2011 at Barbour Medical Center in Eufaula. Funeral services were held on Thurs., Jan. 27, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Chapman Funeral Home Chapel in Eufaula with the Rev. Bryce D. Mitchell and Rev. Allen Stephenson officiating. Burial followed in Sunrise Memorial Park in Greenville at 3 p.m. with Chapman Funeral Home of Eufaula directing.
Mr. Smith was born May 7, 1920 in West Point, Miss. To the late Cleveland Henry and Lacey Virginia Thompson Smith Sr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Evelyn Goodrum Smith.
After serving in the United States Army during WW II, Mr. Smith moved to Greenville where he started a successful shoe repair business, which he operated for more than 30 years. Mr. Smith organized and began the Butler County Rescue Squad, was a volunteer fire fighter, served on the City Council and was selected Greenville’s Man of the Year in 1970. He was also a Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star, a Master Mason and a long time members of the First Baptist Church of Greenville. He resided in Eufaula for the past nine years, where he attended Georgetown Baptist Church.
He is survived by his children: Earnest (Judy) Smith, Gulf Shores, Larry (Yvonne) Smith, Montgomery, Tommie (Laurie) Smith, Orange Beach, Norma (Jack) Parker, Eufaula, Nancy (Steve) Schrall, Pensacola, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; niece, Rhetta Smith, Eufaula; special friends, Nora Ming and Melissa Hudson, both of Georgetown, Ga.
