ALDOT encourages drivers to avoid travel during winter storm

The Alabama Department of Transportation has made preparations and mobilized personnel and resources across the state to respond to icy bridge/road conditions and other adverse impacts that are expected to develop overnight Sunday.

ALDOT crews will continue efforts to keep roadways passable as long as conditions allow. However, based on current forecasts travelers should expect that many roads statewide will become impassable with the onset of freezing conditions Sunday night.

ALDOT officials strongly caution that driving should be avoided until conditions have improved enough for safe travel.

“The approaching winter storm has the potential to be the most severe Alabama has seen in recent memory,” said ALDOT Director Joe McInnes. “The safest advice for the public is to avoid driving. ALDOT crews have been preparing and will work to keep roads passable for as long as safely possible, but the National Weather Service has said travel will become nearly impossible at some point.”
