In just over a month, runners will take to the road in memory of Stephanie Martin, who died of colon cancer two years ago.

The inaugural Martin’s Movement 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk is the result of months of planning by Wanda Martin, Stephanie’s mother, and others.

“We’ve wanted to do it for a while, and we’ve gotten a number of people involved and working on it,” Martin said.

Running for a cause is nothing new for Martin and a group of her friends, who have traveled to Birmingham to participate in the annual Rumpshaker 5k Walk/Run.

The Martin’s Movement run brings that involvement back to Crenshaw County, and Martin said that the local event’s proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life.

“All of our proceeds will be targeted to benefit colorectal cancer,” she said.

The inaugural run will take place on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 8 a.m. at the Tom Harbin Ag Center on Airport Road in Luverne.

The pre-registration deadline is Oct. 29, and the entry fee is $25 for the 5K and $15 for the mile.

Registration includes a goodie bag for all participants, a medallion for all children participants, a t-shirt provided for all pre-registered and as available for those who register the day of the race and entry into a drawing for door prizes.

5K trophies will be given to the top three overall male and female runners.

All donations are tax-deductible.
