The Crenshaw Christian Cougars kept their record perfect with a 53-7 win over Ashford Academy on Friday night.
The Cougars didn’t waste any time in getting to the endzone as Kyle Furr took a run 52 yards on the second play of the game.
A minute and 12 seconds later, Furr returned a punt to the Ashford 16-yard line and Justin Thrash took it into the endzone on the first play for a 14-0 lead.
Before the first quarter was over, Michael D’Arville took a punt return 46 yards for a touchdown and Furr added a 5-yard touchdown run.
In the second quarter, quarterback Pete King connected with D’Arville on a 43-yard play and Shaun Lewis scored on a 12-yard rush to put the Cougars ahead 42-0 at halftime.
D’Arville took another punt return 58 yards to the house in the third quarter, and Lewis capped the scoring with an 18-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
“We had some punt returns for touchdowns, so I was pleased with how we played on special teams,” said head coach Roland Jones. “We also got a lot of guys some playing experience in the second half.”
Furr was the leading rusher with five carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns, but Lewis was close behind with 13 carries for 91 yards and a pair of TDs.
Overall, King was 4-7 for 89 yards and a touchdown.
Austin Stephens caught two of those balls for 47 yards and D’Arville had a 43-yard touchdown reception, along with punt returns of 46 and 58 yards for touchdowns.
Several Cougars had an outstanding night on the defensive side of the ball.
Freshman Gavin McKenzie was the leading tackler with eight solo tackles and one assist.
Wilson Hord also contributed eight tackles.
Both Rann Smyth and Thomas Mills had six tackles.
Seventh-grader Colton Kelley also came up with an interception for CCA.
The Cougars travel to Chambers Academy next week.
