Jacob Free hit a two-run homer as Crenshaw County eliminated Greenville 3-2 from the Dixie Youth Majors State Tournament on Sunday.
Free’s hit marred and otherwise solid performance on the mound by Greenville pitcher Barrett Bush, who pitched a complete game for the host team. Bush held Crenshaw County to four hits and struck out seven batters.
Crenshaw County took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a one-run single by Tate Tatom.
Crenshaw County starting pitcher Trey Stewart and reliever Ke’Vontae May held Greenville’s batters in check until the top of the fourth inning when Austin Vickery launched a two-run shot over the centerfield fence. Greenville led 2-1. Hunter Weeks came in to retire the side and Free answered Vickery’s home run, reclaiming the lead for good for Crenshaw County in its half of the inning.
Greenville had the tying run on first in the sixth with two outs, but Free corralled a short hopper and raced to first base to end the game. Free, May, Weeks, and Stewart held Greenville to four hits.
Vickery also added a single for Greenville. Draklin Scoggins had a single and Devon Middleton added a double.
For Crenshaw County, Labronze Barber and Stewart also had basehits.
Crenshaw County fell to South Bibb on Monday night. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
