With a final tournament score of six under par, Josh McLendon claimed the Greenville County Club Men’s Invitational title.
This marks the second tournament win for McLendon.
Though he had a good weekend all-around, it was his performance on the first nine that put him on a path to the championship.
“It was just one of those rounds where everything was going right,” McLendon said.
McLendon finished seven under par, sinking five birdies and one eagle on the front nine.
At that point, McLendon said, he had to ignore the impulse to start getting excited.
“Well I just tried to stay in the moment and not get ahead of myself,” McLendon said. “That’s the cardinal sin in golf–you start trying to figure out what your score is going to be, and you’ll end up losing concentration and hitting a bogey.”
The championship is held once a year and is for ages 16 and up, McLendon said.
Though he didn’t leave the tournament with one of those giant three-foot-wide checks, he was awarded a trophy with his name on it that he gets to keep until next year’s competition.
