With tallies down across the country for Relay For Life this year, the American Cancer Society is looking to turn trash into treasure with a giant yard sale.
On Saturday, July 25, the I-65 Relay For Life Rummage Sale will take place, and the local Cancer Society Board is looking for donors to clean out their clutter and help a good cause.
A rummage sale center will be held at the Old Sam’s location on Eastern Blvd. in Montgomery that Saturday. Donations can be dropped off at that same location on the following dates: July 21, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.; July 22, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and July 23, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
A sneak preview sale will be held on Friday, July 24, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a $5 entry charge.
The July 25 rummage sale will run from 8 a.m. until noon.
“This is something we want to encourage our area citizens to support, and I will be happy to help deliver any donated items to Montgomery for the event,” said Galahad Smith, chairman of the Butler County ACS Board.
In other RFL news, the board discussed creating a cycling event prior to next year’s Relay to serve as advance publicity and as a fundraiser.
“We were down overall in funds raised this year, as everyone was. But what we gained in publicity and the fun we had, more than made up for that,” Smith said.
“This had to be one of the most enjoyable Relays we have ever had.”
One thing very much needed for next year’s event: Volunteers.
“We need volunteers to help us; it’s a tremendous task putting on Relay, and we those who can help us with the activities, the Luminarias, the logistics and other areas on the night of Relay,” Smith said.
Next year’s RFL is set for May 7, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the YMCA. For more information, contact Galahad Smith at 334-657-9057 or 382-6886.
