YMCA forming travel soccer team

Young fans of soccer in Greenville now have another opportunity to get more involved through the formation of an under-14 travel soccer team.
“As far as I know, this is the first travel soccer team in Greenville in some time,” said Lisa McKeague, who is helping organize the team. “We’re hoping to provide soccer for lovers of the sport at older years.”
The YMCA sponsors a youth soccer league, but this team focuses on kids that have aged out of the YMCA program.
“I hope it’ll be successful and the kids will just keep moving up,” McKeague said.
McKeague is working with the YMCA to help organize the team, which will be joining up with the Enterprise Soccer Club.
“We are registering with the Alabama Youth Soccer Association through them,” she said. “We will also be playing in official tournament-style games sponsored by the Southern Soccer League.”
The Southern Soccer League brings in competition from Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi to play.
The first game is scheduled for Feb. 21 with other games in March and April.
“This is 11-on-a-side soccer,” McKeague said. “It’s a whole different level that’s just above rec league soccer.”
The registration fee is $25, with a $10 fee per play date.
“It’s roughly the same amount as YMCA soccer,” McKeague said.
The coed team will be coached by Galen Grider, and the team is hoping to find sponsors for uniforms.
There are a few spots left, so inquiries should be made as soon as possible.
For registration information, call Amanda Phillips at the YMCA at 382-0550 or Lisa McKeague at 382-2490.
