The Butler County Relay For Life for the American Cancer Society is still eight months away. However, members of the ACS Relay For Life board know it is never too early to start planning for one of the community and county’s biggest events.

Nearly 1,000 people participated in the Butler County RFL in 2008, raising more than $116,000 for cancer research, advocacy, education and patient services.

The 2009 event’s goal is $121, 592.

“We are approaching people to commit to RFL sponsorship now,” said chairman Galahad Smith.

“This doesn’t mean monies are due now; we just want to get a jump on getting the sponsorships on place. We got off to a late start last year, and we feel things will go much more smoothly the more we get done in advance.”

Sponsorship monies will be due on April 1, 2009. Overall Sponsorship goal for 2009 is $34, 200.

The 2009 event is slated from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., May 8 and 9 at the Greenville YMCA.

Smith said new board member Gerri McGinnis already has “tons of ideas” for next year’s roster of activities and entertainment.

“We are still looking for volunteers who can join us and help with planning and putting on this event,” Smith said.

Community representative Jessica Garrard urged board members to visit NAPA auto stores this fall to look for the special pink hats featuring Alabama, Auburn and Troy logos.

“The monies from the sales of these caps goes to the American Cancer Society, so get yourself a pretty new cap, support your favorite team and support the cause,” Garrard said.

The next RLF board meeting is set for Wednesday, October 15 at noon at Cambrian Ridge.
