LUVERNE — Greenville's chance for redemption was over before the first batter reached the plate in the first inning Tuesday at Chuck Person Park.
Greenville's Dixie Youth baseball team was knocked into the loser's bracket after falling 5-1 in the first round to Elba.
Greenville had a chance to turn the tables, but a strong hitting performance by Elba prevented that from happening.
Elba pounded Greenville's pitchers by scattering 12 hits, while Greenville could only muster four.
Elba jumped out to a 4-0 lead by sending eight players to the plate. Matthew Brunson led the scoring barrage when he led off with a single to right field.
He and teammate Bradley Wilson scored on a two-RBI single to left by A.J. Johnson. Johnson and Ethan Mount scored on another two-RBI single by Joe Davis.
Greenville looked to be able to bounce right back from a big first-half of an inning by Elba by loading the bases with two out.
But a strikeout later left all three stranded.
Elba added to its lead in the next inning. Wilson's second hit of the night was a two-run bomb to center field to score Dylan McCullough and himself. Then Mount cracked a RBI single past third base to score Johnson.
Greenville finally scratched the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning.
Terrance Hatcher crushed an Elba pitch for a triple to right field. He later scored with two out on a RBI single to left field by Demarcus Robinson.
Elba answered Greenville's lone run in the top of the third inning by scoring a run to push its lead back to seven runs.
Then Elba added another run in the fourth and put the final nail in Greenville's coffin in the fifth inning by scoring two more runs to put the mercy rule into effect.
Hatcher and Robinson accounted for half of Greenville's hits on the night. Aaron Callen had one hit, and Steven Lee had the other.
