Five students along with Coach Reggie Mantooth traveled to Dothan's Robert Trent Jones golf course Sunday to compete in the State AISA Gold Tournament and came away placing sixth among the 19 teams competing.
&uot;Most of the players joined the team, having played for awhile,&uot; Mantooth said. &uot;I didn't have to teach them a lot but we would get together and play a few times a week.&uot;
The team, consisting of Mason Bass, Joseph Ryan, Brett Paulk, Will Farrar and Ben Bates, scored 348 on Monday and 339 Tuesday. Farrar was the top performer on Monday shooting an 83. Mason Bass had the team best on Tuesday with an 82, followed by Ryan with an 83.
The title went to the Tuscaloosa Academy team which shot a 307 on Monday.
&uot;They won it last year as well,&uot; Mantooth said. &uot;Right now they're just head and shoulders above everyone.&uot;
Mantooth said he was real pleased with his team's performance.
&uot;We have a young team this year,&uot; he said. &uot;Will is a ninth grader and our most consistent performer. Mason is a sophomore and probably our best player. Everyone has their own individual strengths.&uot;
The team's only senior is Joseph Ryan.
&uot;Except for a few bad holes, we were pretty consistent at the tournament,&uot; he said. &uot;I think we will improve next year and do better than sixth.&uot;
Next year's tournament will be hosted at Cambrian Ridge in Greenville.
