Greenville Academy's Tornado wrestling team traveled to Edgewood on Tuesday night to compete against some of their toughest rivals.
The meet included teams from G.A., Edgewood Academy, Hooper Academy, Bessemer and Marion Military Institute.
In the 73-lb. class, Kyle Foster was defeated by Bessemer's Milstead and Hooper' Brown. Andrew Allen was next, in the 80-lb. category, and lost to Hooper's Moncrief and Edgewood's Oakley.
Then in the 90-lb. group, Kyle Tanner lost to Bessemer's Briggs and Edgewood's Montgomery.
In the 105-lb. grouping, Justin Sexton lost to Hooper's Cannady and Edgewood's Wilkins.
Joseph Aaron Godwin was successful in defeating Edgewood's Hill for the 112-lb. category, and Jason Duncan defeated Edgewood's Oakley, but lost to Bessemer's Chapman in the 126-lb. bracket.
Justin Greene lost to Edgewood's Hoover and Marion Military Institute's Sutton in the 132-lb. group.
In the 138-lb. category, Dustin McNeil defeated Hooper's Gafford, and MMI's Williams.
James McGough lost to MMI's Patterson and Bessemer's Beasley in the 155-lb. group.
It was Travis Watson in the 167-lb. class that beat MMI's Sternberg, but lost to Edgewood's Norris.
Rounding off the tournament for G.A., Josh Williams represented the heavyweight division by defeating Hooper's Rodgers and Edgewood's Seaver.
Coach Jeffrey Atkins said he was proud of the way that the Tornados faced their opponents. "We competed against three 3-A teams, one of whom was Hooper Academy," Atkins said. "They were last year's State runner-up team, and will be again making a strong run for this year's title."
Citing the efforts of his young team, Atkins spoke well of their efforts. "We saw some areas that need some improvement, and we will be working on those areas in preparation for our next meet, here in Greenville on Monday night," he said.
In previewing next week's competition, Atkins said that there is also a stiff challenge. "We will host Glenwood, last year's State Champion, and third-place Macon East Academy-these teams are always a tough challenge."
The Tornados' next meet is on Dec. 4, and the weigh-in is at 5 p.m., with wrestling starting at 6 p.m.
They will again play host on Saturday, Dec. 9 when Meadowview, MMI and Bessemer come to the Camellia City. Weigh-in on that day will be at 8 a.m., and wrestling will begin at 9 a.m.
